
Nightlife tends to be focused on the many hotels; in the rural areas there is little.
Open to non-residents, they offer wide-ranging programmes of folk dancing
and music evenings during which the musicians and dancers explain the origins
of their folklore, their costumes and instruments. Forthcoming events are
advertised throughout Funchal, but follow
no set pattern.

Housed in a striking building – the locals
call it the ‘rack of lamb’ – the casino offers
French and American roulette, Black Jack,
chemin-de-fer, and racks of slot machines.
